Intelligence Inflation

Rasanya la, if I were to throw a stone at a crowd somewhere, there's 99.99% guarantee that it will hit a student who got straight As in his SPM. Compared to the time when getting 10A1 will entitle you to an exclusive coverage in all of the major newspapers, getting all As in SPM seems to be the norm these days.

So, intelligence is in abundance these days. Were we not very clever back then or kids nowadays are just getting better & better?

A note of caution : won't this lead to inflation of straight As students in the country?

my theory is people don't necessarily got cleverer as naively indicated by the no's of straight A1s scorers. Otherwise, you would see a surge in the no's of university grads locally and overseas who scored first class ye dak?

cleverer students @ SPM -> masuk uni ala2 aku je ha ha?

I think it's a classic examples of short circuiting the whole process through line specialisation, ala-ala Ford Motor Co's la ni.

The education process is all about regurgitating exercises and past year questions now, so the more you practice the better you are with the techniques to score.

So results go up, but ppl are not necessarily jadi makin Einstein.

I can relate to this because this is how CAs are trained for exam. All in all we had less than 3 months of classes to qualify - so the theory tu kau kena learnt it the hard way masa kerja, but to pass the exam.... ha ha the tutorial is all about exam techniques!

Anyway my 2 pounds worth (aku tak main laaa 2 cents weh)

tu la pasal (amik line mrpo kejap)....aku tengok yang dapat straight As dah berlambak-lambak sekarang nih. dah tak grandeur ler plak....kalo dulu 10A1 dalam 6 orang je satu mesia....me still prefers A1/A2/C3.......instead of A/B/C....

kno,

agreed.masa kita dulu, aku yang dapat 14 agg ni pun still can kembang dada & cakap kuat2 bila orang tanya. la ni, kalau sedara mara tanya, dengan agg banyak tu, alamatnya cancel la jadik bakal menantu...

noni kapet,

my point exactly. I wrote that in jest. I am just afraid the current students will lulled into illusions of grandeur thinking that they have conquered the world whereas the situation is the exact opposite. But try pointing that out to the proud parents or perhaps the minister himself. U should know better lah...

It was pointed out in this week's Dewan Rakyat session that our local exams are monitored by the Cambridge Univ. Wonder, just how much of that is true?
